What's at the core of the smartwatch revolution?

The biggest advantage mobile brought to businesses was the app. Apps changed the way we interact with brands, redefining communication and giving birth to a whole new economy.

Can we even imagine living without apps today?

The smartphone revolution is now behind us - according to strategy analytics, global smartphone shipments fell 3% on the previous year in the first quarter of 2016. As business leaders we need to look ahead.

What we see happening before our eyes is a new revolution, led by smartwatches. Strategy analytics say that, during the first quarter of this year, the smartwatch market more than tripled 2015’s equivalent figures.

But what is at the core of this wearable revolution? To put it simply, it pioneers a new type of relationship with the user.

Constant connectivity has become an integral part of our everyday life, and, in order to address our growing needs, it has to evolve to become more similar to us. Technology should think like us and proactively provide the information we need, when we need it.

At the core of the smartwatch revolution there is the need to live an easier digital life. 

Smartwatches are quicker to access (they are on the wrist), interactive and multi-sensorial, but they require smarter interaction, adaptive to context and personality, to be really easy.

A smartwatch app should not require the user to learn how it works; the app needs to learn to understand what the consumer needs and when.

Consumers now want intelligent solutions that interact on their terms, at all times.

We are moving from frequent use to continuous use. This is such a radical change, and one that can be supported only if we start conceiving different services and the entire relationship we want to build with customers. 

From a technology perspective, we need to start considering forms of artificial intelligence as a standard component. 

This is not science fiction, it is here now, and thanks to the big data present on the phone, is easily implemented.

This is going to change the customer’s expectations radically, redefining what creates value for consumers in a similar way to how the internet changed our needs for news, entertainment and communication.
